Lots of visitors to wine country pack their trunks with picnic baskets filled with goodies to enjoy in bucolic splendor. While we applaud the DIY sensibility, picnickers are missing out on some great restaurants that can turn a day of winery hopping into a full-on culinary event. And here's a fringe benefit: When you leave the cooking to others, you've got more room in the back of your sedan for another case of wine. |

Tony Bilson successfully combines two of Sydney's current obsessions - tapas and wine bars.

THE 2005 Domaine de Villeneuve Chateauneuf du Pape ($22 glass-$110 bottle), a mix of five different Rhone grape varieties, slides down far too easily with crumbed pig's trotter ($30). Soon a second glass is called for.
Even more extravagant, there's a new, lean and elegant chardonnay, Tappanappa ($28, $130), made by Brian Croser in the Adelaide Hills, as part of a joint venture with Chateau Lynch-Bages and Bollinger. Cop that Burgundy. |

Though it was created by an Australian, South Food + Wine Bar is the type of venue that has become extremely popular here in the Bay Area. Part restaurant, part lounge, it's the kind of place you can stop in for a casual weeknight meal with a friend. Yet the combination of good food and wine, stylish design and attentive service also brings in the occasional work group or celebratory dinner. Most people in the Bay Area will be unfamiliar with the chef, but Luke Mangan is a star at his restaurants in Sydney and Tokyo. He was joined by a compatriot as well as a New Zealander to create the Australian-leaning menu as well as a wine list of exclusively Kiwi and Aussie producers. |
