Just imagine, driving an exotic sports car, maybe even a rare Enzo Ferrari through Northern California’s beautiful wine country. Then you take that fantastic driving machine for a spin on the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.
Sounds like a dream… right? Perhaps. But this is a dream to fight a nightmare one little girl lives everyday… epilepsy.
Little Bronte and 40 million other people suffer from epilepsy. Bronte has a severe form of the disease called, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. She suffers from severe and traumatic seizures that have stolen her ability to speak. Presently, Bronte is sporting a short hairdo because she is recovering from two brain surgeries to control the frequency and severity of her seizures.

So why is sweet Bronte sitting in front of a gorgeous Enzo Ferrari? Bronte’s grandparents, Chris and Mary Lou Sordi are exotic car enthusiasts. They own the Enzo and a few other Ferraris. Persistent Mary Lou is determined to find a cure for epilepsy. And she will even use the couple’s amazing car collection to do it.
On Sunday, May 3rd, the Sordis are sponsoring, “Drive for a Cure.” The event is a car rally to raise funds and awareness about epilepsy. The proceeds will go to the Bronte Epilepsy Research Foundation. The Foundation then donates 100 percent of the funds go to epilepsy research and other hospitals and treatment centers. Car enthusiasts will gather in Sacramento and in San Francisco the morning of the event and drive through the beautiful scenic roads of wine country. The two groups will meet at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.

Once at the Raceway, the participants will drive around the track, like a “walk-a-thon on wheels,” to raise money for epilepsy research. A catered lunch will be served to participants. Everyone is invited to stay and watch the Ferrari Challenge which will be held at the raceway later that day.
The participant who raises the most money will win a three day-two night stay at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Second prize is a case of fantastic wine (my favorite). There will be other fabulous prizes as well.
Even if you don’t own an exotic car you are still invited to attend. Simply pay the raceway entry fee of $20 for your chance to see these amazing machines close up. You can even stay to watch the Ferrari Challenge Race later that day.

Again, “Drive for a Cure” is Sunday May 3, 2009. To learn more about the event or Bronte and her family’s courageous struggle, go to www.bronteepilepsyresearch.org. You can also sign up for the event on that website as well.
Just in case you don’t know much about Ferraris, I’ll fill you in. There were only 400 Enzo Ferraris manufactured. There are only nine black Enzos in the world. The Sordis are blessed to own one of these rare vehicles. If you have car enthusiasts in your life, please let them know about this event.

It is a wonderful chance to see this magnificent car up close. It’s also a great opportunity to raise awareness about a disease that afflicts so many people. And heck, it’s a great excuse to drive through California’s beautiful wine country in the springtime!
