Call it clever and eye-catching -- or perhaps just shameless self-promotion. But you have to hand it to Francis Ford Coppola. In an era when marketers try to seamlessly and subliminally blend products into movies, Coppola would rather come out and just hit you over the head with a bottle -- literally.

Hollywood heartthrob Antonio Banderas has joined a growing number of celebrities whose passion for wine has led to ownership of Spanish vineyards, his winery co-owners say.

Banderas, 48, who has appeared in the "Legend of Zorro" and as the voice of Puss in Boots in several "Shrek" movies, has bought 50 percent of a state-of-the-art winery on the banks of the Duero River in northern Spain, the winery says.

The Spanish actor joins a list of owner-producers that includes American actor Michael Douglas, French star Gerard Depardieu and Spanish singer Joan Manuel Serrat.

The 230 hectare (570 acre) property, called Anta Banderas, makes red and rose wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and local grape Tempranillo, the winery said Tuesday in a statement.

(This version CORRECTS to say Banderas voiced Puss in Boots in Shrek movies, sted Shrek.)

Grape news! The Police frontman is going into the wine business, expects first bottles this fall

The celebrity vintner field is getting crowded. Soon joining wines from Olivia Newton-John, Cliff Richard and Francis Ford Coppola on the shelf at your local liquor emporium will be wine produced at the Italian country retreat of none other than Sting. About 30,000 bottles from the Tuscan property, called Il Palagio, are expected to go on sale this fall in select countries, including the U.S.

No news yet on the wine's name, says the AP, but you can expect Sting's sips to be "based on the Sangiovese grape, with a touch of Cabernet and Merlot." And there may be a Chianti in the works, too.
