We all know that green beer is a staple of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. If you are throwing an Irish shindig this St. Patty’s Day, I challenge you to spice it up with wine and wine cocktails. No you don’t have to totally ditch the beer. Just offer your guests a choice. I’m going to share with you a few recipes for Irish wine cocktails that are sure to please your guests. I’ve even got a recipe for a really good shepherd’s pie. So here it goes…. GREEN WINEThis one is a no-brainer. But if you don’t have much experience with green food coloring, be careful!-1 Bottle of white wine -2 to 3 drops of green food coloring Viola! Now you have green wine. Tips: Go easy on the food coloring. Start with a tiny, and I mean tiny bit of green. This stuff is potent. You can always go darker if you want. If you add too much green food coloring, your white wine will be so dark in color that it will look almost black. IRISH KISS
-1 ounce Midori Melon Liqueur SOPHISTICATED IRISHMAN-1 cube sugar -3 dashes bitters -3 tbsp. Irish whiskey -6 ounces chilled sparkling wine or Champagne -1lime Drop sugar cube in the bottom of a Champagne flute or wine glass. Add bitters, then Irish whiskey. Pour in sparkling wine. Twist of lime, then garnish with lime. IRISH SANGRIA-1 bottle white wine -2 limes cut into wedges -1 orange cut into wedges -1 to 2 green apples cut into wedges -1/2 cup sugar -1 to 2 shots Irish whiskey -2 cups club soda, ginger ale, (for sweeter use 7-UP or Sprite type beverage) -2 to 3 drops green food coloring (optional) Pour wine into a pitcher. Squeeze juice from lime and orange wedges into wine. Then add lime, orange and apple wedges to wine, being careful to remove the seeds. Add sugar and Irish whiskey. Chill overnight. Add carbonated soda just before serving. Add food coloring if you want your sangria to be green. For an easy Shepherd’s Pie recipe, click here. Before you drink your wonderful green wine or Irish wine cocktail, here’s an Irish St. Patrick’s toast to make the drink truly authentic. Saint Patrick was a gentleman, Who through strategy and stealth, Drove all the snakes from Ireland, Here’s a toasting to his health. But not too many toastings Lest you lose yourself and then Forget the good Saint Patrick And see all those snakes again. Sláinte! (Pronounced 'slawn-cha' meaning ‘health’ or ‘cheers.’)
