 TANIS VINEYARDS

Ever pick up a bottle of wine and wonder, “How did they come up with that label?”  I do it all the time because I’m always coming across bottles with crazy labels and wacky marketing.  I have to admit I love it.

When you pick up a bottle of Tanis Vineyards wine you see grapes and poison oak, surrounded by a wedding ring.  There has to be a story behind that.  Well, there is.  It’s a love story.

In the last issue of Vino Primo I told you I would be writing an ongoing series on “sexy wines.”  But this issue, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I’m going to feature a romantic wine… Tanis.

Tanis Vineyards is in the Amador wine region, in the Northern California foothills.  Jill and Andrew Tanis opened their winery one year ago this month.  I guess you could say it’s an anniversary of sorts.

Back when the Tanis Family was just starting their labor of love in their vineyard, Andrew lost his wedding ring while hand pressing grapes.  The lost ring is a symbol for them.  They believe that although sometimes there are disappointments and loss in life, the important things remain:  faith, hope and love.  Those words, in Italian, are inscribed on the ring, “fede, speranza, amore.”

It’s that kind of commitment and love that have helped them build their vineyard and helped them build their life together.

“Marriage is hard work.  But the rewards are worth it,” said Jill.  “Marriage is a lot like this winery.  Even when things are challenging, we know we’re working for something we love.”

I featured Tanis a few months ago because they were a brand new, baby winery.  I told the story of how wine brought this couple together.  And their love of wine grew as their love for one another grew.  To read that article, click here.

Today at one year old, Tanis is going strong.  In fact, they are completely sold out of all their 2005 wines.  Not a bad start!

I recently got a chance to taste their 2006 offerings.  Andrew is the winemaker.  He is doing some wonderful things with these wines and experimenting with different varietals.

I took home a bottle of their 2006 Barbera.  Yum.

TANIS 2006 Barbera, Amador ($28)
Winemaker Notes:  A big, bold, jammy wine that feels like you could spread it on toast!  Deep, dark and delicious! Pairs amazingly well with Cocoa-Rubbed Pork.  Click here for recipe.

If you stop by Tanis, you have to try their Pinotage.  It’s a South African grape varietal.  I’ve heard a lot about Pinotage lately but had not tried it.  Wow, this wine is different than anything I’ve ever tasted.  It’s really good.

TANIS 2006 Pinotage, Amador ($24)
Winemaker Notes:  Unlike any varietal you've had before.  This is a classic Pinotage.  Almost indescribable, you can pick up some good earthy notes and definite dill flavors and aromas. Pairs well with Cool Chipotle Cream Salmon.  Click here for the recipe.

If you love white wines, you’ll love their 2006 Viognier.  I sure did.

TANIS 2006 Viognier, Amador ($18)
Winemaker Notes:  Very refreshing!  A crisp and clean white, with notes of citrus, pineapple and kumquat.  Pairs well with Chicken PiccataClick here for the recipe.

My choice for a Valentine’s selection is their “TNT Dynamite Red.”  It has an “explosive” red label to set the mood for a romantic evening.  Oh and by the way, the wine is great too.

TNT Dynamite RED, Amador ($20)

Winemaker Notes:  This year our TNT is a fun blend of Zinfandel and Syrah!  Berry, black cherry and hints of white pepper on the back end.  An excellent everyday wine!   Pairs well with anything, even chocolate.

Speaking of chocolate… February 7 & 8, and Valentine’s Weekend, February 14 & 15, Tanis Vineyards will be pairing various chocolates with their fabulous wines in their Amador County tasting room.  Stop by and enjoy.

You can find Tanis at 13120 Willow Creek Road, Ione, California, 95640.  Or check out their website:  www.tanisvineyards.com.
