HOLLAND, Mich. - Residents of one western Michigan county have voted to end a decades-old ban on Sunday beer and wine sales, despite concerns about wording of the ballot issue.
Opponents of the ban objected to ballot wording requiring a "no" vote to legalize Sunday beer and wine sales in Ottawa County.
The proposal said, "shall the sale of beer and wine ... between the hours of 2 a.m. and midnight on Sunday be prohibited?"
The "no" vote Tuesday was 90,500 to 43,722, or 67 percent in favor of letting stores and restaurants sell beer and wine.
County residents voted to ban Sunday alcohol sales in 1976. Sales of liquor by the glass became legal in 1981 but beer and wine sales remained illegal. Residents still can't buy packaged liquor on Sunday.
